CIEH Level 1 Food Safety Awareness in Catering.

This qualification raises awareness of food safety issues and provides employees with an induction to food hygiene, prior to undertaking the Level 2 Award in Food Safety.

Who should undergo this qualification?
The CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety can be used to provide staff with induction training. It is ideal for individuals handling low risk or wrapped foods, including:
  • new employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge
  • employees handling low-risk or wrapped foods
  • front of house employees, such as waiting or check out staff
  • back of house employees, such as kitchen porters or warehouse staff

The Level 1 Awards are also suitable for employees for whom English is a second language or those with special needs.

Why is this training important?
Food business operators must ensure that employees are trained in food hygiene commensurate with their duties to ensure safe food is provided to consumers. 


Learning outcomes
  • Understand the basic requirements of food safety and hygiene
  • how to keep themselves clean and hygienic
  • how to keep their work area clean
  • the role they play in reducing contamination
  • Identify key food safety issues 


Duration: Half-day programme
Assessment: Multiple choice examination
